Forces Push Closer To ISIS-Held Mosul

Kurdish and Iraqi forces pushed closer to Mosul on Sunday in an ongoing offensive to move in on the Iraqi city and free it from the grip of the Islamic State.

Kurdish forces said they seized a “significant stretch” of highway and cordoned off eight villages, now standing less 5 miles from the city, the Associated Press reports. Kurdish Peshmerga forces also said they took control of Bashiqa, a town about 8 miles from Mosul, although journalists weren’t permitted to go there, Reuters reported.

The president of the Iraqi Kurdish region, Masoud Barzani, also told U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter that Kurds took control of Bashiqa, according to Reuters. – READ MORE
