Early voting for the 20th U.S. Congressional special election race began Tuesday between Republican Karen Handel and Democrat Jon Ossoff.
If Democrats want to gain a congressional seat before the 2018 midterm elections, this race is critical to secure the coveted spot. Democrats have already lost both special elections held in 2017, first Kansas in early April, followed by Montana in late May.
“It’s hard to remember a House race that has earned more national attention than the one to replace Secretary Tom Price in Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District,” The New York Times said.
The sixth district has been known to lean Republican in recent years, but GOP support has declined. “President Trump won the district by only 1.5 points, even though it’s traditionally quite Republican, with Republicans outnumbering Democrats by 20 points in that race,” TheNYT said. “Mitt Romney won by 23 points in 2012.”

Ossoff almost won an April 18 primary, but Handel forced a runoff election. “Recent polls give Mr. Ossoff approximately 43 percent of the vote, which would leave him well short of the 50 percent necessary to avoid a runoff in June,” TheNYT reported at the time.
With many distrustful of polls following the 2016 presidential election, eyes are turned to Georgia and this special election. The official voting day is June 20.
