Another Shoe to Drop? Two Unidentified Congressmen Accused of Sexual Harassment Remain

Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) last week said she knew of two current members of Congress who engaged in “sexual harassment.” She confirmed Tuesday that Rep. Jon Conyers (D-MI), now facing multiple allegations of his own, is not one of them, according to CNN.

“Speier is declining to reveal the names of the two sitting lawmakers — one Democrat and one Republican — out of deference to the victims and their potential legal restrictions,” reported CNN. “Last month, Speier described instances when she had been harassed and assaulted while she was a young staffer in Congress.”

Speier has proposed legislation to overhaul Congress’s current system to handle sexual harassment, which could signal it’s a bigger problem than the people they represent know.

“The member should be named, and the repayment to the Treasury should be made by the individual who was the sexual harasser,” Speier said. Speier’s legislation is correct, they should be named — like the two congressmen Speier knows about yet will not name. The accusers can remain anonymous and those accused can and should be named.
